Makeup for glasses: practical rules

Glasses are a frame for the face and competition for the eye. Once you know which direction your prescription "pulls" the look of your eye, makeup becomes a matter of adjusting intensity, not a whole new set of products.
First: what your lenses do to your eye
- Minus prescription (myopia/nearsightedness) visually shrinks the eye β it needs more definition and light.
- Plus prescription (hyperopia/farsightedness) enlarges the eye and highlights every detail β it needs fewer products and cleaner lines.
- No prescription (sunglasses, blue-light glasses) β the rules are the same as without glasses, just watch the brows and the frame.
Minus prescription: give the eye back its size
- A light, satin eyeshadow across the whole lid instead of a matte dark one.
- A thin dark line at the lash root, without a thick eyeliner.
- Two coats of mascara on the top lashes; keep the bottom ones light.
- Highlight in the inner corner β the fastest trick for an "opened up" eye.
Plus prescription: less is better
- One neutral eyeshadow, well blended, with no glitter.
- Eyeliner only at the lash root, or none at all.
- One coat of mascara, without clumps β the lens magnifies them.
- A thin layer of concealer, so it doesn't crease under the nose bridge.
Brows and frame
The brow should be visible above the frame, or fit cleanly along its line β the only problem is when it's cut through the middle. How to determine your brow shape is covered in brows according to face shape, and choosing a frame in glasses according to face shape.
Complexion, concealer and lipstick
- The nose bridge collects shine and marks: set that area with a light powder.
- Choose a thin, elastic concealer β a thick one creases where the frame touches the skin.
- When the eye is understated, lipstick takes the focus: a medium-saturation colour from your palette.
- Check your foundation shade against your undertone, as in the guide foundation according to skin undertone.
A dark frame already plays the role of an eyeliner. When wearing a bold frame, tone down the eye and boost the lips β not both at once.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a smoky eye with glasses?
Yes, with a thinner frame and well-blended edges. With a thick, dark frame the face quickly looks overdone.
How do I stop eyeshadow from transferring onto the lens?
Use creamy or well-pressed eyeshadows, apply them before putting on your glasses, and tap off excess from the brush.
What about dark circles under glasses?
The lens highlights them. A thin layer of concealer one shade lighter than your foundation, applied without pulling the skin, works better than a heavy cover.
In closing
Adjust the intensity to your prescription, keep one focal point (eyes or lips), and align the brow with the frame. Those three decisions make the difference between looking "tired" and looking "rested" in the same glasses.
